transporters and friends

Hi guys
So i'm much to addicted to this game for my own good especially as I can't seem to get anywhere. I've been reading the forums both spoily and non and am still clueless. I even thought maybe I'd been levelling up the wrong skills and started a completely new character but I'm still having the same problems.
Some of these are

1) How do I go about making people my friends? I've offered all sorts of people all sorts of things and have had no joy, even when they seem to be asking for them (the guard in the hillfolk enclave doesn't want trefoils, the veteran there doesn't want a good meal etc). The only person I have had any luck offering anything to is the crone woman who tells me what things are. I am also supremely stumped by the closed door in the enclave I either aren't mentioning the right things or haven't found the right person yet I guess.

2) I found what I thought was a transporter in St Zutrins progress (the egg thing) and a rune pattern in a study in the monastery that it for St Zutrins gardens. I got all the runes I needed to make the pattern and put them in the transporter and nothing happens. This is real annoying cos I was so pleased with myself for finding the runes and working out what to do...

3) I can see there is a path at the Northern most end of the Ribbonmarch in Doobah hills not far above Devilfoot Bridge. There's a green question mark on the other side of it, but I can't find any way to get there, I'm blocked by mountains.

4) There's info about a round hole to the west near the entrance to the caves in the east Bagdah hills. I can not find this hole or anything else to do with it. Also I killed the chieftan on the the second level of the caves there but died before I could save and have not gone back because I was looking for other prisoners or info on why I was a prisoner and couldn't find either

On that last note I haven't been able to find out anything about why I was in jail. I am also blocked by the fog in Silverwood

Alright so I have answered some of my own questions. I found the floating log and the scout and got to hills above the ribbonmarch through the pass. I also discovered that the reason the transporter wasn't working was because I was trying to transport to where I already was. Go figure. For some bizarre reason I thought the Zutrin rune would take me back to a time when the gardens were cared for and there were people in the monastery.

This is my first time playing a roguelike, please 'scuse my silly mistakes . I don't even know why they're called rougelike.
Was talking to an eighteen year old boy the other day and he was saying how great RPG's were and I was like yeah I know. He was going on about Diablo and asked me what I played and I had to say ummmm... you won't know it.
Legerdemain meaning sleight of hand (the word was actually in the book I'm reading - yay!)
